  1. Book title: Percy Jackson’s Greek Heroes

Book Author: Rick Riordan (or if you’re a true fan, Percy Jackson himself)

How do you like the book so far?: I enjoyed the book quite a lot because it provided a “modern hero’s” insight into the tales of the old heroes. The way Mr. Riordan tells these classic Greek stories never fails to amaze me.

Are you going to finish the book?: Yes, I will definitely finish.

    1. Title: Front Desk
      Author: Kelly Yang

This book focuses on a young girl Mia and her family moving from China to California. This book brings awareness to the struggles of living in poverty in America and the mistreatment of immigrants. These are important topics but I rather read fantasy novels that take me on a magical journey. The heavy topics of this realistic fiction novel just makes me sad. I will try to continue to read the book because I am hoping for the best for Mia but it is unlikely that I will finish it.

  3. The Trials of Apollo: The Tower of Nero
    Rick Riordan

Surprisingly, the latest installment of Riordan’s mythological series is unsurprising. Riordan has a reputation for raising the stakes in the final book of his series, such as Percy Jackson and the Heroes of Olympus books. In comparison, the first chapters of the book are formulaic and dull. Regardless, I will continue reading the book. Being the last book in Riordan’s overarching Greek mythology series, nostalgia and blind optimism compels me to finish the “Tower of Nero.”

  4. “Give the Dark My Love” by Beth Revis is an interesting concept for a fantasy novel, especially after I have read the “Blackthorn Key” series. While the characters seem half-baked and poorly conceived, their interactions have become more compelling in the most recent chapters. I will keep reading this book.

  14. “Death on the Nile” by Agatha Christie is much different than her other works. The first 100 pages of the novel is dedicated to character building, rather than the title murder itself. Still, its a welcome surprise. Christie’s characterization is compelling. I will finish the book.

  26. Title: The Library of Lost Things
    Author: Laura Taylor Namey
I’ve spend at least a couple hours today reading this book (just got it yesterday from the LPL), and I love the book so far because it talks about how even though the main character named Darcy, is struggling to make decisions, family issues (not spoiling), she’s able to make her escape through books, reciting poetry/text, etc. I also like how the book as a whole isn’t all about focusing on the romance part of the story, but what it means to be loyal in the relationships you have.
    I’ll definitely finish this book!

  27. I am reading “The Cruel Prince” by Holly Black. It features a diverse cast of characters and a genuinely interesting story. The protagonist is tolerable, but irritatingly fits the “not-like-other-girls” trope. All of the other women in the book enjoy feminine-associated activities such as “finding true love” and “nurturing children.” The female protagonist struggles with alienation and “not fitting in.” The protagonist also enjoys typically masculine activities, and her sisters are promptly replaced with her male classmates. Whether intentional or accidental, the author dismisses the virtues of feminine-associated traits such as “kindness,” “sensitivity” and “vulnerability.” The protagonist herself has explicitly distanced herself from these traits. It also implies that the protagonist’s desire for strength, power, and knighthood is an exceptional case in women, rather than proving that these values already exist in many women, despite the barriers. Nonetheless, the book is interesting enough for me to finish it.

  43. “The Hate U Give” by Angie Thomas is one of the best books that I have read this Summer. I was originally hesitant about reading it because it was “overhyped.” Oftentimes, authors use serious issues as supplements to their main plot and a marketing strategy. Thomas fully adopts the premise of police brutality. The writing is dynamic and dialogue-driven, giving it a realistic flow. Each chapter is meaningful and purposeful.

  45. Book title: All the Light We Cannot See
    Book Author: Anthony Doerr

So far, I am greatly enjoying the book. The author has a talent for describing even the simplest of things beautifully. The plot is engaging, and the non-chronological order is refreshing. While incredibly descriptive and discussing heavy topics, the writing style keeps the book from overwhelming you.

  50. Title: Frazzled Everyday Diasters and Impending Doom
    Author: Booki Vivat

My first impression reading this book was did someone just write a book about me. This book is about Abbie Wu and all her worries as she is about to enter middle school. My favorite part was when Abbie thought her teacher Ms. Skelter was going to curse her but instead Ms. Skelter advised Abbie to run for class president. This book was an easy read and relatable. So after the first 100 pages I decided to finish the book. I want to move on to the second book.

    Author: Kendare Blake

I am really enjoying the book thus far. It started off a tad confusing, since there are LOTS of characters. In addition, there are three main protagonists, so it was hard to follow at the start since the chapters switch between three different settings and three different sets of characters. As I get further into the book, the plot gets more interesting and the three different worlds start to connect. I will finish the book because I am invested in the relationships and need to know which of the 3 sisters ends up becoming the queen.

At first, I liked this book as we learned more about the characters, their backstories, and their personalities. Eventually, though, it got boring. The Erasers would attack. This book is most probably my favorite book out of the wings of fire series. Ive read all of the wings of fire books (including dark stalker and most of the winglets), and I have been waiting for so long for this book, im very happy I finally got to read it. The main protagonist is really funny and in an actual “sort-of-real” life situation, as she is the new ruler of a kingdom, having to deal with a real giant problem.

  148. Book Title: Fake
    Book Author: Donna Conner
After starting this book, so far, even though it captures really good the feelings on teen insecurity, body image comparison, and bullying, I feel that the story itself is a little bit lacking and predictable. I might finish this book, just to see where it leads me, but other than that, this is what I’m reviewing it as so far.

  149. Title: Educated
    Author: Tara Westover
This book is a memoir of Tara Westover’s (the author’s) life. She grew up in a family of seven children, and her parents distrusted going to school, going to the hospital, or doing anything that they thought would conspire with the government’s “evil” plans. For this reason, most of the family did not have birth certificates! It is pretty interesting so far, but it’s moving really slowly, and I am not really interested in the detailed descriptions of how Tara helped her father with trucks and hauling metal.

Trying to understand where the everybody comes from (that everyone has there own story) , and to plan on seeing for yourself who YOU, yourself are, rather than who the bullies say or haul hate on you for. Some things I’m enjoying about this book are that even though it’s a lighter read (only about 150 pgs.), there are lots of life lessons to be learned and recognized from reading this book, such as finding an outlet, and what you enjoy most about life. I will definitely be finishing this book soon.
